Aivars Smaukstelis, part-time strongman and sales manager, is representing Latvia in the 2019 Tachi Palace World’s Strongest Man. This will be his second appearance competing in WSM. He is seeking a spot in the Final to try to become the first Latvian to qualify since 2006. The 31 year old strongman stands 6’2” weighing in at 324lbs.
Aivars would best describe himself as a calm and open person, who is happy and kind. He states: “Life isn’t easy, You need to fight all the time. Sometimes smaller fight and sometimes bigger and harder fights, but still you need stand up and go further.”
Aivars started Strongman because he believes it is a much more interesting sport than powerlifting. “You need to be fast and strong, with good endurance. If you miss one of these three things, you won’t be able to win.”
Balancing work and training can be difficult.
“It’s hard. After work you train and then go home, eat and sleep. In winter, there are
moments when start thinking ‘why do I need this?’ I’m lucky my wife understands what I do and she helps me.”
Aivars started Strongman training and is first strongman competition at age 18 (now 31).
He had also participated in powerlifting and was awarded as Latvian Junior Champion 125kg (275.6 lbs),
