Before competing in strongman DeVaughan played baseball in college, eventually turning pro and joining the Toronto Blue Jays. After retiring from playing he was looking for something to fill the competitive void baseball had left. “I tried strongman and fell in love with it,” says DeVaughan.
DeVaughan works as a personal trainer, which gives him constant access to the gym and allows him to schedule his work around preparing for competitions. However, he’s not always had access to the best equipment, “Long before I started strongman I was working a two-week job deep in a forest. There were no weights available so I used a tree branch with cement blocks on the end to mimic a barbell.” If that’s what he was willing to do before he was competing, expecting him to stop at nothing during WSM.
