Gerhard Van Staden
Gerhard Van Staden took second place in South Africa’s Strongest Man contest in 2010, and went on to take the top spot in a return to the competition in 2011.
Gerhard’s interest in strength training came – as it did for so many Strongmen – from idolising former champions during his schooldays, and watching the competition avidly on TV.
When Gerhard began competing he said he came last in every competition he took part in for the first two years, but with strength and self-belief kept going and went on to begin winning title after title and smashing challenge after challenge.
When he isn’t training, Gerhard looks after his Lions in his sanctuary at home and working with a South African University to set-up educational camps where people can come and learn how to conserve the wildlife still left in his native South Africa.
