Laurence – or Big Loz to his friends and fans. He remembers watching the World’s Strongest Man contest on TV when he was young, and says that is what inspired him to begin training. Strength and endurance tests have, he says, always fascinated him. However he started out in a different kind of sport, his position was a tighthead prop for Gloucester Rugby team playing in the English Rugby Union.
Big Loz has said that he admires Žydrūnas Savickas and believes he is the greatest strength athlete of all time. Intensity and belief in themselves are the qualities he most admires in other strongmen and tries to emulate himself.
Shahlaei’s (pronounced Shah-lay) best World’s Strongest Man position to date was in 2011 when he came joint 4th just out of the podium title with 36.5 points. The same year he broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest Farmer’s Walk, carrying 150kg in each hand for over 20metres in an astonishing 6.73 seconds.
When he’s not training, Laurence runs his own strength and conditioning, coach and personal training business, and has even appeared on Deal or No Deal where he lifted Noel Edmonds up above his head during filming!
